Seniors enjoy safety talks with NSRI

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) held a safety talk and awareness campaign for the senior citizens at Arcadia Retirement Village.

THE residents of Arcadia Retirement Village welcomed Helen Wienand, the PRO for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), for a presentation on the organisation and water safety recently. The talk gave a detailed look into the NSRI’s history and its vital work along South Africa’s coastlines.

Humble beginnings

Dawn Solomon, chairperson of the village’s entertainment committee, said the residents enjoyed the session, particularly the story of the organisation’s origins. “The NSRI actually started thanks to the dedication of a single lady who raised the funds for their very first rescue boat by selling raffle tickets! From those raffle ticket funds, they purchased a simple “rubber ducky” boat, and the entire operation began with just two brave volunteer guys,” said Solomon.

Ongoing efforts

The presentation then outlined how the NSRI developed from these humble beginnings into a nationally respected rescue service. The NSRI responds to emergencies at sea and along inland waterways, saving numerous lives through the continued commitment of its volunteers. Wienand also encouraged residents to consider becoming involved with the NSRI’s various activities and community initiatives.

The residents were invited to visit the NSRI’s harbour base for a social tea. This visit would offer an opportunity to observe rescue operations firsthand, however that’s if the home is able secure transport.

Solomon expressed their appreciation to Wienand and the NSRI for their work and taking the time to speak to the senior citizens.
