Mother appears in court on child neglect charge

According to information received from the police, the accused left her child at her rental house in Montclair on May 16.

A WOMAN from Montclair appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently for a case of child neglect after she allegedly left a child for two days without adult supervision.

The mother of a one-year-old boy, Akhona Lubambo (25) was arrested on May 19 after neighbours heard the child’s screams and raised the alarm.

According to the information received from the police, Lubambo left her child at her rental house in Montclair on May 16.

Police spokesperson in Montclair Constable Norah Ndlovu said the accused left the child lying in bed with no food.

“Neighbours who heard the baby screaming went inside the house to investigate. Upon their arrival they found the baby boy visibly shaking from hunger laying in bed. They took the child to a man who was once in love with the accused.

“The ex-boyfriend later brought the child to the Montclair police station. The child was kept at a place of safety,” she said.

According to Ndlovu, the situation took a turn on May 19 when the child’s mother arrived at the police station demanding that the child be returned to her.

“She was arrested for child neglect,” Ndlovu added.

The accused is scheduled to make her second appearance in court soon.
