Dan Draper to retain pre-drawn format

Open to any team combination, all visitors are welcome.

BIG news for bowlers at Wanderers Bowling Club is that the upcoming Dan Draper Tournament will remain all pre-drawn and not strength versus strength, as it was announced.

The organisers felt it would be too much of a headache for a tournament consisting of 10 matches to play it on strength vs strength, which is more suitable for events played over a full day or at most, a weekend. There are a few vacancies for teams for this year’s Dan Draper, which takes place over the first week of July. Call Jean Edley on 079-548-8046 or Wanderers Club on 031-462-2320 to enter your men’s or women’s team.

Last Wednesday the Roadrunner’s pairs were played. Although Roadrunner Ron Jackson himself was not present, proceedings were admirably handled by Joan Bruce and Ken Koch. Winners on the day were father and son, Raj and Russell Rangiah, who ended with the top score of 4+18 proving that to win events of this nature, it is vital to win both sessions. I mentioned that, because each of the session winners scored more than the winning combined score but both sides lost the ‘other’ session.

First session winners were Colleen Blenner-Hassett and sister Daphne Els with a 2+22, and second session winners were the hubby and wife team of Brian and Paula Osman with 2+20. Cynthia Addinall won the lotto with her numbers 3-8-9 and scooped the R180 jackpot. Robbie Carr, recently back from his sojourn to the USA, won the pork raffle and Derek Stevens (R40) and Bob Hayward (R20) took the 60/40 board offerings.

Last Friday, 12 men left for Cape Town to compete in the nationals. While the club wishes them the very best of bowling, it did leave the field slightly short of the required number for Sunday’s fours skins, which had to be cancelled. Recent news in is that Steve Van Rooyen’s team of himself, Graham Funnell, Eric Smit and Shaun McAlister have won their section in the fours.

The only club competition reported to this scribe was the tightly contested final of the women’s nominated pairs which took place during the week. In the end, Joan Bruce and Gerrie Jordaan triumphed by two shots (23-21) over Nicola Bauristhene and Gwen Tait to take the title.

The Friday night snowball of R1,200 was again not won as Derrick Botha was not present.

The various meat winners were: Mutton pack Temba, sirloin steaks Russell Knott, chicken pack Maggie, lamb chops Mitty, pork ribs Porky, chicken Temba.

Next Wednesday is the Lyn Wild pairs. Open to any team combination, all visitors are welcome. Call Ron Jackson on 076-034-1055 or 031-464-7990 to enter or confirm your team. The men’s league will resume only on Saturday, 31 May which means there is a free Saturday, 24 May to get some club comps played.
