A WARNING of increased robberies within the Brighton Beach SAP area has been issued by police.
Business, home and common robberies are on the rise, with guns and knives being used to threaten victims. The following safety guidelines have been issued by communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux:
* Do not challenge your attacker(s): They will not hesitate to hurt you. Rather do as they demand and try to remain calm.
* Do not carry large amounts of cash while travelling: Use electronic fund transfer facilities or a bank guaranteed cheques.
* Be vigilant at all times: If you think a car is following you, change direction and go to the nearest police station. Take note of the car’s model, colour and registration number and where possible, the number, race, gender, clothing and other defining characteristics of its occupants.
* Use main roads and not staircases when walking: Try not to walk at night and avoid shortcuts through parks, stairs or sports grounds. Also, refrain from walking while using a mobile phone as it limits your concentration on your surroundings.
* Use security features efficiently: Lock security gates after entering or leaving and activate alarm systems. Business owners should install CCTV cameras in strategic areas both indoors and outdoors, which should be inspected regularly.
