Gun, ammo seized from Wentworth pair

Couple caught trying to conceal weapon.

A MAN and woman caught driving around with a gun and ammunition were arrested in the early hours of Sunday, 26 April thanks to a tip given to Brighton Beach SAPS officers.

Police officers who were involved in a special operation on Bluff Road were told that the driver of a car containing six people was allegedly in possession of a supposedly stolen gun.

Two teams of officers searched the area, found the car and blocked it off at the corner of Quality and Chamberlain Roads. While approaching it, the officers saw the driver handing something to one of his passengers.

A search of the passenger revealed a Rossi .38 special revolver with serial number scratched off and four spent cartridges. The driver, a 22-year-old man and the passenger, a 20-year-old woman, were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The gun was sent for ballistic tests to determine if it was used in any crimes and it will be sent for etching to recover the serial number.

In the meantime, the pair from Wentworth were granted bail of R2,000 after they appeared in Durban regional court on Tuesday, 28 April.

“Captain Kreeba Govender of the Brighton Beach Detective Services and her team are commended for their swift response upon receiving the intelligence, which resulted in tracing the vehicle, arresting the suspects and retrieving the unlicensed firearm,” said Brighton Beach SAPS communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
