Excitement as tots meet police

Excited youngsters met with police officers in Wentworth.

MANY little voices could be heard throughout the station as pre-school pupils met with Wentworth SAPS officers on Thursday, 23 April to learn about the police force.

Accompanied by teachers, Noblene and Gladys and teaching assistants, Rachel, Mbali and Delene, pupils from Little David Educare visited the Wentworth police station. Communications officer, Lieutenant Gumede said the aim of the visit was to foster an understanding of the work done by the police and their role as protectors of the community.

On a tour of the station, the youngsters were treated to many talks, including one by a volunteer from the Wentworth Victim Friendly Centre (WVFC) and another from an officer from the community service centre (WCCS). WVFC’s Mrs Wendy spoke to them about respecting elders and WCCS’s Constable B Biyela explained the work police do in the area to serve the community.

“The visits are welcome and must be made by appointment. It is important to the children as they learn more about the police environment. They should not look at the police as enemies, but as mothers and fathers who they can report any problems they encounter to, without fear,” said Lt Gumede.
