Transformer theft threatens rail safety
Transformer theft is on the increase in South Durban.
WITH the risk of train derailments as a result of transformer thefts, Brighton Beach and Montclair SAPS are concerned about the increase of transformer theft within the area.
The areas where the most thefts have been reported are Bayhead, Kingsrest, Havenside, Mobeni and Montclair. Police say the transformers are stripped and the parts are sold to scrap metal dealers.
According to Brighton Beach SAPS communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, the value of a transformer is around R3,500 but the value of the copper salvaged sells for about R75 to R85.
“The theft of these transformers affects the effective and efficient functioning of passengers and goods trains,” said Capt Le Roux. She added that derailments can be caused by these thefts as transformers regulate electrical signals and pressure points for trains; the thefts cause delays in departure and arrival times of trains and contribute to damages caused to the infrastructure of the rail reserve.
The police call on anyone with information on these thefts to contact them. “This also includes any second hand goods dealers who are receiving these items, or selling components thereof,” said Capt Le Roux.
