YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute has really been busy this month.
First of all they started with a great trip to their residential home in Richmond, and what a welcome they received from all the residents.
Member took along some snacks, more than enough, and a shower chair which they donated to the home to assist some of the residents. It was good to see some of the residents already using the fidget cushions. Many thanks to the husbands who did all the driving.
YWPWI president Vanessa Wilesmith opened the May meeting with the Mary Stewart Collect and then introduced members to their speaker of the evening, Rev Boet van Schalkwyk who gave a most informative talk on all the work carried out by the Sailors’ Society of South Africa. Many thanks to Jan Kirk for arranging the speaker.
What magnificent work these volunteers give to the seamen, providing all sorts of extras for their wellbeing. He also advised on the traumatic time the sailors have when pirates manage to get on board the ships. They assist when sailors are hospitalised or when disaster strikes. They certainly need support. Fortunately members were able to hand over a cash donation, mittens and beanies for the sailors, but they will still be knitting for them.
After an enjoyable tea break, the secretary’s report and the financial report were read and the president advised regarding certain resolutions that are to be put forward at the SAWUA meeting and also a vote on the Federation president.
There were no members celebrating birthdays this month. All the handbooks for the year have been collected by all members Many thanks as always to the volunteers who do Meals on Wheels and Botanic Gardens duty. Lots of members are continuing to make the fidget cushions and the WI hopes to hand them over at a later date. Judge Linda Melson reminded members to ensure that anything on the cushion is really sewn on tight and if possible, no beads. Thanks to members who continue to assist with the raffles. It was good to see Norma Chaplin back with YWPWI.

The meeting closed with the Women’s Institute prayer. YWPWI meets on the last Monday of each month and looks forward to seeing lots of visitors.
