UPDATE: MEC welcomes rooting out of ‘rotten apple’ cops

But warns against community assuming that all police officers are corrupt

The KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has expressed grave concern at the arrest of a Durban Metro police officer for possession of drugs.

A joint operation by the Hawks and Durban Metro Police yesterday led to the arrest of the 29-year-old officer. The Hawks and Metro police found the suspect at his flat in Wentworth, south of Durban, where he was allegedly packing cocaine in small plastic bags. He was arrested and charged and drugs with an estimated street value of R35,000 were seized.

Today (14 August 2015), MEC Mchunu expressed grave concerns at this development.

“It is, indeed, of grave concern if there are suggestions that police officers, the very people who are charged with maintaining law and order, are now allegedly involved in undermining the law.

“We welcome the arrest of the officer. We have said time and again that the majority of people who are serving in the police service are men and women of high integrity. Equally, we have accepted that there are those few within the force who are rotten apples,” said MEC Mchunu.

He added that the law should take its course without fear or favour. “However, we wish to caution members of the public not to assume that all police officers are corrupt.

“Our message is clear. Let us work with those police officers who are law-abiding and serving with integrity. Equally, let us expose and isolate those who are not trustworthy and corrupt,” said Mchunu.
