Ambulance stripped by thieves

The community was left without an ambulance for a day and lives were put at risk

NOT even ambulances are safe from car thieves, as the Bluff based Berg Protection Services (BPS) Medical team discovered on Monday, 10 August, when they went outside to find their ambulance gone.

When staff members went outside to wash the ambulance at 5am, ahead of their duties for the day, they found nothing but an empty space. Thankfully the vehicle was fitted with a tracking system and they were able to determine it had been stolen at about 2.50am that morning.

They traced its circuitous route and found it had finally come to a stop in U section, Umlazi. When police found the ambulance, its wheels had been removed and equipment, including the GPS and oxygen tanks, were gone.

“They knew what they wanted to take. The community was left without an ambulance for a day and lives were put at risk because of these thieves,” said BPS Medical Durban South operations manager, Michael Lemon.

To help the team get back up and running as quickly as possible, the Bluff’s Unique Towing and Recovery donated new tyres and rims.

“My thanks go to Unique for their much-needed sponsorship, especially Jorgen Jorgensen-Lian and Hendrik Nunez. It is amazing to see how the Bluff rallies together to support those who need it. I also extend my thanks to Brighton Beach SAPS and C Track for their assistance,” said Lemon.
