KwaZulu-Natal police cautioned taxi association members to refrain from accosting and attacking buses and other minibus taxis that have been privately hired to transport commuters in their jurisdiction areas.
This warning comes after an incident that took place during the climate change workshops being held by the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) from 27 to 30 October at the Austerville Civic Centre.
Youngsters from other townships and suburbs attending the workshops have been transported to the workshops in buses and minibus taxis that were hired to transport them. It is alleged that local taxi association members attacked the drivers and threatened them with firearms.
KZN police commissioner, Lt Genl Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the confrontations and warned associations to stop since their actions are criminal. “We will ensure that we police the areas affected by such incidents together with other stakeholders to ensure the safety of the commuters. Firm action will be taken against offenders and they will be charged accordingly,” she said.
