THERE has been an increase in business break-ins in Clairwood and Jacobs this month and owners are urged to take precautions.
Brighton Beach SAPS has issued a warning following a sudden spike in break-ins, especially between 2am and 5am.
“Contributing factors are no or insufficient security measures,” said media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
She has provided the following safety and precautionary measures to reduce the risk of business break-ins:
- Ensure the name of the business and building number are clearly visible, to allow a prompt response by police and security companies.
- Ensure sufficient lighting after hours.
- Install surveillance cameras, an alarm system that includes sensors or laser detection.
- Install a panic alarm system inside the building and inside the security gate office.
- Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked when closing.
- Dogs are great early warnings systems. Ensure the security dog is allowed to move freely on the premises after hours.
- Ensure wire fencing is secure and that damaged areas are repaired immediately.
- Place additional security measures such as barb wire or electric fencing.
- Ensure foot patrols are conducted hourly by security guards.
- Ensure personnel and security guards are informed not to interfere with the crime scene to preserve physical evidence.
- When approached by a sales representative or technician from a security company who wishes to compile an assessment, ensure they identify themselves with their PSIRA card.
- Teach employees to be vigilant when on duty and report suspicious behavior.
