A PENCHANT for pasta has 11-year-old Nalani Britz a spot in the final of the Hirsch and Defy junior super chef competition on Friday, 8 July.
Nalani, whose fondness for cooking began when she started helping her mom out in the kitchen at age four, took on eight other contestants aged from eight and 13 to win her way to the final.
The contestants were each given a box with unknown ingredients, one hour and the choice of either making a starter and main meal or main meal and dessert. Nalani cooked up a butternut salad starter and creamy chicken pasta main meal.
“The competition was scary, but fun. The other contestants were friendly and the judges helped us all out,” she said.
Her beaming father, Andre Britz, said: “It was awesome to see her succeed, I am so proud”.
The Brighton Beach Senior Primary School pupil, whose favourite dish to cook is pasta, succeeds outside of the kitchen too, with a passion for soccer, maths and Toastmasters. She has plans to be a chef and accountant after her studies.
She will now take on three other KZN youngsters to win the KZN junior super chef title on Friday, 8 July at the House and Garden Show.
“Thank you to the people who are supporting me. I would like to enter more cooking competitions after this one. It is so much fun.”
