Woodlands WI supports CHOC
Parents have access to a treatment centre which is in close proximity to the Lodge and House and they can be rest assured that their child is getting the best help needed.
WOODLANDS Women’s Institute president, Maureen Lavis opened the meeting on Friday, 8 July with the saying of the Mary Stewart Collect and welcomed all present, including guest speaker Gavin Hegter who explained how to do special votes and Agie Govender from CHOC.
Tea time followed the business part of the meeting and after birthdays for the month were announced, Maureen introduced the morning’s speaker, Agie Govender from the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC), who explained what the organisation is about.
CHOC KZN has the CHOC Lodge which is 13-years-old and CHOC House in Pietermaritzburg which is three-years-old. This accommodation is a safe haven for any child who has cancer. Parents have access to a treatment centre which is in close proximity to the Lodge and House and they can rest assured that their child is receiving the best help needed. CHOC provides free accommodation to caregivers and the cancer-stricken child, with three meals per day, unlimited tea and coffee and access to social workers who provide counseling to the mums and conduct support groups. A cash donation together with several children’s activity cushions made by WWI members was handed over to Agie, who thanked everyone for the opportunity to address the institute with the hope of continued support from members.

Maureen closed the meeting with the women’s institute prayer and reminded everyone to take along white elephant items in good condition to the next meeting on 5 August. These items are needed for the sales table at the upcoming Tafta Park, Bellair, fete on Saturday morning, 6 August to raise much-needed funds for the Southern Hills Group of FWI.
