Chidlren’s care centre celebrates NPO status

The registered non-profit organisation, which provides a home for orphaned children, has been in operation for nearly 21 years, but recently received its NPO status, allowing the volunteers to offer further support to more children.

“When my husband was transferred to Durban, I decided I wanted to do something, so I contacted the welfare and asked how I could assist. We started as crisis parents, eventually becoming foster parents and finally adoptive parents. I adopted my daughter when she was a baby and she is now 21,” said the organisation’s founder, Rensia Martin, as she smiled fondly at her child.

The Martins took in a number of children over the years, providing a home and support for them and they now hope to expand their ability to even more children in need.

On 5 August, a dinner ceremony gave thanks to the long-time supporters of the centre while welcoming new friends and opening the doors of the Rainbow Nation Care Centre as a registered NPO.

The home on Bluff Road currently houses 11 children, aged from three to 21-years-old. These children attend local schools and through the support of local businesses and organisations the Martins and the centre’s volunteers are able to educate, clothe and feed the youngsters.

“The plan is now to find bigger premises,” said Rensia. “I am looking for companies to come on board and help us. The more hands we get, the more children we will be able to help. I also need a new car to transport the children as mine is old and in need of repairs.”
