New steering committee leads SDCEA
THE new South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) steering committee was elected at the organisation’s biennial general meeting (BGM) on Saturday, 30 July.
The Austerville Civic Centre hosted the event, attended by some 60 community members and local organisation members.
“This BGM was a platform for members to share their experiences and involvement regarding the work SDCEA has done especially between 2014 and 2016,” read a statement by SDCEA on the meeting.
Mr Naicker, Mervyn Reddy, Rhonelle Duma, Desiree Bishop, Zakia Kikia Khan, Mrs Buthelezi, Vanessa Black, Brenda Pratt, Vusi Zweni, Deepchund Kalicharran, Mrs Perumal, Layla Abraham, Eddie Govender, Riaz Khan, Bob Abraham, Rishi Sewsunker, Mazwe Ndwandwe and Cedric Saunders are the new steering committee to oversee the organisation.
“We are optimistic the new committee will continue the good work that was started 21 years ago, ensuring that environmental racism is kicked out, inviting sustainable development where all can benefit. Overall the meeting was a success and we wish our new committee all the success,” said SDCEA.
“SDCEA’s continuous growth is taking local knowledge to the national and international arena. This BGM is a turning point in the continuous growth of the SDCEA,” added SDCEA co-ordinator, Desmond D’Sa.
Committee member, Mervyn Reddy said he would like to see the committee assist the Clairwood area to return to its former glory.
“SDCEA’s entry in working with the hostel dwellers is a key game changer as SDCEA helped educate, development, improve the living conditions and inform on how to communicate better with government. The hostel dwellers’ partnership with SDCEA has been empowering,” said Vusi Zweni.
