German scuba diver dies in South Coast shark attack
The situation is being investigated.
AN extensive search for a scuba diver ended in tragedy yesterday, Wednesday, 12 April when his body was recovered off the South Coast.
At about 1.45pm the NSRI in Shelly Beach and Port Edward along with police search and rescue responded to reports of a missing scuba diver at the Northern Pinnacle, Protea Banks.
“According to a group of divers on a charter scuba dive they had been surfacing from a dive, when the man disappeared,” said the NSRI.
NSRI Shelly Beach sea rescue craft, Caltex Challenger and Spirit of Dawn and NSRI Port Edward sea rescue craft, Wild Coast Sun Rescuer and a police search and rescue boat joined the search for the man, which also involved private vessels and Transnet National Ports Authority, Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, NSRI Durban and Telkom Maritime Radio Services vessels. NSRI Air Sea Rescue and 15 Squadron’s Augusta helicopter also joined in the search.
SAPS, Medevac ambulance services and Hibiscus Fire and Rescue Services were on stand-by on the beach.
“An extensive drift pattern and sweeping line search operation was conducted utilising the three sea rescue craft, the police search and rescue boat, private boats, private fishing boats, and charter boats and police divers conducted a scuba dive search.
During the search the remains of the body of the man, who was believed to have been bitten by a shark, were located by crew of a private fishing boat. The remains were recovered from the water onto a sea rescue craft and brought to shore.
The remains of the 68-year-old German citizen have been taken into the care of the forensic pathology services and police have opened an inquest docket.”
