Movies reviews: Kong: Skull Island and Beauty and the Beast
Some great movies to check out.
Kong:Skull Island:
The sheer scale of Kong is astounding and the host of other unusual characters is magical to see.
What I enjoyed about the film compared to other portrayals was the female lead – she is not defenceless or in constant need of saving.
This movie has something for everyone. The storyline reads more like a war tale with all the emotional and mental conflicts. The love story is subtle and does not detract from main action.
The special effects are amazing and you really get the feel for the action. This is paired with slowed down scenes that capture the emotional fight alongside the physical one.
On the whole, it is an allegory for man’s destructive nature and the way in which he treats Mother Nature.
A group of scientists head to an as-yet unexplored mysterious island permanently surrounded by treacherous storm.
Unbeknown to the scientists and those accompanying them, the expedition was in fact the brainchild of Bill Randa who hopes to find beast-like creatures.
Chaos ensues.
Look out for the Jurassic Park Easter egg in the form of a phrase from Samuel L Jackson’s character when the helicopters head into the storm
My only issue is that there isn’t enough of an emotional connection with some of the characters when they meet their demise for us to feel too much.
All-in-all, I say definitely check it out.
Beauty and Beast:
For lovers of musicals and/or Disney classics this is a no-brainer. It had me singing along to the classic songs.
It is another of Hollywood’s movies in a line-up of live action remakes, which includes Maleficent and The Jungle Book and those yet to be released like Cruella and The Little Mermaid.
Helmed by the indomitable Emma Watson, this movie evokes a sense of wonder and nostalgia.
It was a treat to see the inner strength of Belle as she faces every obstacle.
Josh Gad’s performance as Disney’s first openly (subtly but definitely so) gay character, LeFou has turned the usually one-dimensional character into someone noteworthy.
The subtle portrayal was great to see and will perhaps lay the path for more diversity in future Disney films.
I will admit feeling emotional during the iconic dance scene. Seeing it brought to life was breathtaking.
Watching the famed characters come to life in song and dance was a delight.
Definitely go watch and take your children with you to inspire a new generation of fans.
