Durban South Basin enforces compliance

SOUTH Durban Basin (SDB) joined forces with Metro Police, Durban Solid Waste (DSW), and other departments, ensuring compliance in the Clairwood area.

This special operation took place from February 28 to March 4, where various residents, who were non-compliant, were charged with offenses such as unlicensed vehicles, and businesses, as well as other traffic violations.

SDB provided support, guidelines, and assistance to local businesses to warrant compliance within the area. Captain Sanjay Ramsunder from Clairwood Metro Police, encouraged businesses to comply with the laws of South Africa.

“People need to register their businesses and abide by the rules of the country whether you are a foreigner or South African the law is still the same, as long as you live in this country it applies to you,” said Ramsunder.

According to Ramsunder, the following charges were made that week: road obstruction (98), facing oncoming traffic (11), unlicensed vehicles (22), and overload (one) mentioning a few charges.

The basis of the enforcement is to ensure infrastructural and social-economic conditions of eThekwini Municipality are up to standard to attract investors.

SDB coordinator Irene Chetty ensured a smooth operation despite the outbreaks that take place from time to time between the department workers and the business owners.

Chetty expressed the importance of complying with regulations.

“It is vital that people follow the rules and work together with the department to ensure the smooth running of this operation, I do not promote violence against department workers. I encourage community participation and all will be smooth. The area is characterised by multiple businesses that require an intensive inspection and certifying of by-law compliance,” she said.
