WATCH: Flood victims accused of looting councilor’s office

Montclair police are investigating a case of theft and assault.

FLOOD victims from Umlazi who were being housed at the Yellowwood Park Civic Hall have been accused of looting the offices of Ward 64 councilor, Gavin Hegter, on Tuesday, May 17.

Communications officer of the Montclair SAPS, Captain Derek Vijiam, said police are investigating a case of theft and assault after a group of about 30 out of the 150 people living in the hall, were accused of looting clothes which were a part of a donation for another of the ward’s initiatives.

Hegter said, “The outpouring of support from our community and further afield has been amazing. The donations received were however not only for the group at the hall but also for residents of Ward 64 and surrounding areas who were also affected by the floods.”

“Unfortunately as donations have dwindled, because people should be getting on with their lives, some have started demanding. Today my office assistant and our volunteers were busy sorting out donated clothing for distribution when a group of the people from the hall stormed into my boardroom and started looting the clothing. My highly traumatized office assistant phoned me and I rushed to the office. I called SAPS while on my way. On arrival I found a large group looting. Further to this my office assistant was assaulted by 1 of the male residents when SAPS told her to go get the name of the person who started the looting.
Sadly not one arrest was made today. I want to thank the CPF, SPF and all other community members who came our to assist,” said Hegter.
