WATCH: Skaters roll out the love on promenade for Worldwide Rollout Day

The day is a way for everyone on wheels to build community, cooperation and togetherness.

INCLUSIVITY and a sense of community were two facets of the Worldwide Rollout Day event in Durban on Sunday.

The day, usually held on July 11 across the world, is a way for everyone on wheels to build community, cooperation and togetherness.

Durban’s event, organised by community skating crew, Hop, Skip & Skate, saw skateboarders, rollerbladers, roller skaters and longboarders skate along the Point Promenade.

One of the community organisers, Candice Leth, said she was pleased with the turnout for the event.

“For us, this event was all about rolling out to erase hate, spread love and create an inclusive space. Those were some of the themes for this year’s event. It was awesome skating along the promenade and having a mixture of people on wheels join us. The turnout was great, as well. We all set off as a group, but then the more experienced skaters moved on ahead, whereas the newbies (new skaters) followed behind. We hope to see this annual event grow and attract more people,” Leth said.

Fellow organiser and Westville resident Zakia Dicks echoed Leth’s comments.

“We see ourselves very much as an inclusive community. Today was just a way for us to celebrate all things wheels and create new friendships. There was such a great vibe in getting people rolling. It is encouraging to see how many people joined us, and we hope to continue to grow our community of skaters while having fun,” Dicks said.
