From its inception in 2021, PLLUM’s gala has been a beacon of acknowledgment, shining a light on those whose contributions often go unnoticed. This year’s event saw a remarkable inclusion of four nominations from Wentworth, showcasing the diverse and impactful endeavours of its residents.

All the award-winning community heroes.

Among the honourees was Selwyn Anderson, a champion for AIDS awareness and a prolific author whose literary contributions have enriched the community. Heather Marnitz, acclaimed for her selfless dedication to aiding the vulnerable, received the Woman of Inspiration award, alongside Lorraine Richards, a revered storyteller and journalist.

Reflecting on her accolade, Richards conveyed her appreciation, underscoring how recognition fuels her commitment to service. “Being acknowledged reaffirms my purpose and propels me to continue,” she shared gratefully.

The gala also celebrated Lizzie Mkhize, presenting her with the Humanitarian and Activist Award for her unwavering advocacy in the fight against AIDS. Mkhize’s organisation, Masibambisane, stands as a testament to her compassion and dedication to raising awareness and supporting those affected by the disease.

“I’ve dedicated countless years to this cause, often without recognition. To be honoured today is deeply meaningful,” expressed Mkhize, who is a poignant reminder of the importance of acknowledging those who tirelessly serve their communities.

In her remarks, Conner emphasised the awards’ role in fostering connections and creating community growth. “It’s not just about celebrating individuals; it’s about creating opportunities for collaboration and progress,” she articulated, highlighting the power of unity in effecting positive change.

PLLUM founder and organiser Wendy Conner welcomed everyone to the awards.

As the evening concluded, Conner expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the gala’s success.
