Planned electricity hike sparks widespread concerns

The proposed Eskom hike is expected to add further strain on households and intensify the debate over affordability and economic impact.

SOUTH Africa’s state-owned power utility, Eskom, has announced a proposed 40% increase in electricity tariffs for the coming year, sparking considerable concern among communities already struggling with the escalating cost of living.

The Bluff Ratepayers and Residents Association (BRRA) has strongly condemned the proposed hike, calling it “daylight robbery” aimed at the most vulnerable. The increase is slated to proceed despite strong opposition from ratepayer groups who have been fervently pushing for lower electricity costs.

Communities nationwide have voiced their frustration on social media platforms, with many fearing that the steep rise in electricity costs will exacerbate their financial difficulties.

Eskom, however, has defended its decision, arguing that the increase is necessary to cover rising operational expenses and alleviate its mounting debt. The utility has faced intense scrutiny over recent years due to persistent load shedding and financial mismanagement. Eskom asserts that the tariff hike is a critical measure to stabilise electricity supply in the long run.

Ratepayer associations across eThekwini have met with the officials from the council to show their resistance against the increase.
