Public warned about scammers impersonating police officers

Police warn the public to be vigilant of an unknown person asking for donations on behalf of the Brighton Beach Police Station.

THE Brighton Beach Police have issued a stern warning to the public to be wary of scammers impersonating police officers asking the public for donations.

Police spokesperson in Brighton Beach Captain Louise le Roux said they have received a complaint about an unknown person, claiming to be a serving member stationed at Brighton Beach Police Station, requesting funding for the station.

“The management has not mandated any individual or company to source monies or resources on behalf of Brighton Beach Police Station in fundraising efforts.

“No member from the station has been mandated to engage businesses or individuals to source monies or items to raise funds on behalf of the management,” said Le Roux.

The police urged residents and businesses to be vigilant when being engaged by a person unknown, making a request for any form of donations on behalf of SAPS Brighton Beach.

“Should you receive a request in person, telephonically, through WhatsApp or e-mail, requesting donations for Brighton Beach Police Station, don’t respond. Keep the contact details and send a WhatsApp to 066 220 7033 for urgent investigative purposes. In general, don’t donate to strangers. As the festive season approaches, more scammers will surface,” Le Roux added.
