Construction of Coedmore Bridge remains on track

The flood-damaged bridge is slowly taking on a new shape, with the staging halfway complete ahead of the February 2025 deadline.

PROGRESS is being made on the Coedmore Bridge in Yellowwood Park as construction workers are halfway through putting up the staging. The flood damaged bridge is expected to be complete by February next year.

The sub contractor, Afrostructures which has taken over from Leek Construction cc, will be responsible for constructing the bridge deck along with certain ancillary work.

eThekwini Municipality has earmarked R48 million for the comprehensive construction and repair of the 90-meter long, two-lane bridge, complete with pedestrian walkways.

Spokesperson for eThekwini Municipality Mduduzi Ncalane confirmed that work is progressing at the flood damaged bridge.

“The contract between Leek Construction and eThekwini Municipality for the Coedmore Road Bridge construction and roadworks remains active. Leek Construction has subcontracted a portion of the project to Afrostructures (Pty) Ltd, as permitted under the contract,” said Ncalane.

The bridge was severely compromised during the devastating floods of 2022, necessitating alternative routes for motorists and adding up to 45 minutes of travel time to their commutes.

Funded through the Municipal Disaster Response Grant from the National Treasury, the reconstruction of Coedmore Bridge signifies a pivotal step towards restoring normalcy for residents and commuters affected by the bridge’s closure.
