Refuse collections to continue as normal this festive season

Residents are urged to place their refuse bags on the verge on the morning of their collection days throughout the festive season.

RESIDENTS in eThekwini are advised that refuse removal services will continue as normal during the festive season, including on public holidays. This is according to a statement issued by eThekwini Municipality this week.

“Residents whose waste collection falls on a holiday will still have their refuse collected. The public is urged to place their refuse bags on the verge on the morning of their collection days,” eThekwini Municipality said in a statement.

Operational staff will be working this festive season

The Cleansing and Solid Waste (CSW) office will be closed on 16, 25, and 26 December and 1 January 2025. However, operational staff will be on duty throughout the festive season.

“The public is urged to note that orange recycling bags will not be collected on public holidays. The non-collection only applies to areas whose recyclables are to be collected on the above-mentioned dates. Residents are requested to keep their recyclables and take them out on their next collection day which does not fall on a public holiday.

Black refuse bags: These are used for domestic refuse only and are delivered to each residential property every three months. These bags are not for sale.

Blue garden refuse bags: The municipality also offers an optional, convenient and an easy garden refuse disposal service. Blue bags (with the CSW logo) are used for garden refuse only and can be filled with leaves, grass and twigs. They should not contain any paper, plastics, cans, cardboard or food waste. Blue garden refuse bags are available in selected retail stores, hardware stores and service stations. Residents can choose to be on contract where delivery will be done. Retail fee includes collection and the landfill site disposal cost. Blue bags are collected on the same day as domestic refuse. To set up a blue bag service delivery contract, residents can contact CSW customer service on 031 311 8804 or email: DSW@durban.gov.za.

Orange recycling bags: These are solely for recycling purposes. Households on the Kerbside Programme are supplied with one pack of 15 orange bags. Waste types accepted in the recycling bags are newspapers, magazines, cereal cartons, cardboard, plastics, plastic bottles and tetra pack material. Collection is on the same day as domestic refuse. The municipality is appealing to the public to assist in curbing the increase of illegal dumping sites by reporting all offenders on 031 311 8804/36 or email dsw@durban.gov.za
