Keeping The Bluff beaches tidy this festive season
The Bluff Tidy Team gears up for the next cleanup that will be held in the corner of Voortrekker Street and Thorn Road on December 16.
CLEANING beaches and removing litter in residential areas has become a routine for the Bluff Tidy team. The team members collaborate with the public to clean the marine coastline on The Bluff and surroundings.
The team’s aim is to create a litter-free community and educate the public about the negative impact of destroying the ecosystem.

The team has recently partnered with John Dory’s Bluff, Brighton Beach Community Police Forum and members of the public to clean Brighton Beach.
Community members rolled their sleeves, picked up the beer bottles, plastic bottles and other materials that were dumped along the beach.
This was one of the beach clean ups leading to the last one for the year.
The campaign is spearheaded by local environmentalist Waylon Murray. The initiative saw volunteers collect litter and actively engage with their neighbours to promote anti-littering behaviour.
Murray, is a 15-year-old boy from The Bluff who has been instrumental in organising a series of clean-up campaigns aimed at preserving the natural beauty of the area. Waylon said the campaign has been getting a lot of traction with members of the public showing interest in joining future cleanups.
“There’s not actually a motivation behind this whole cleanup as I just wanted to start cleaning up The Bluff. I realised how dirty our beaches were, that is how I started Bluff Tidy Team,” said Waylon.
He said in three years to come, he foresees the Tidy Team growing and gaining more support from the public.
“With a lot of volunteers helping us and having a clean community and a strong community behind my organisation that supports us, I believe this initiative will go far. The impact of litter on our oceans is devastating. Plastic waste harms marine life, contaminates the food chain, and damages ecosystems. Let’s work together to reduce plastic use, increase recycling, and promote ocean-friendly policies. Every small action counts, from carrying a reusable water bottle to participating in beach cleanups. Together, we can make a difference and protect our oceans for future generations,” he said.
The teams that participated in the cleanup campaign include:
- John Dory’s Bluff
- CPF representatives from the youth desk and Brighton Beach
- Fidelity ADT Security
- Alfresco Cafe – donated refreshments for volunteers
- MrMower Repairs – repaired the equipment for Bluff Tidy Team
- Jack Brown Liqueur Chocolates – donated refuse bags
The next cleanup will be held at the corner of Voortrekker Street and Thorn Road on December 16. For further details contact Waylon on 084 481 0301.
