The event, which took place on a rather humid evening, was filled with friendly rivalry and the festive spirit taking centre stage.

Justin Botha, of the Yellowwood Park Badminton Club, couldn’t hide his excitement.

“It was a great night. Although the conditions were humid, everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. There was a fun and light-hearted atmosphere with plenty of laughs and healthy competition,” he said.

With 36 players in all, the draws had been strategically made, to ensure equalness and fun. The teams were divided into four sections, from which semi-finalists emerged after round-robin style matches. The top teams worked their way up through the semi-finals to the highly thrilling final match.

Ultimately, Ivan Botha and Andrea De Lange emerged as the tournament winners while Luke Philogene and Tristan Campbell were the runners-up.

This tournament was supported by around 20 supporters who cheered the players from court side.

The event was not all about competition, it was also one of community and camaraderie. “Even though it was competitive, it was also very sociable,” Botha said. He added that the evening had been a huge success, and participants gave positive feedback, with many saying they would be eager for events like this in the future.
