Boxing Day fire sparks talks on property accountability

Following a fire that ravaged a slum house on The Bluff on Boxing Day, the Bluff authorities are pushing for the owner to take responsibility.

EFFORTS to address the slum house on Thompson Road that was ravaged in flames on Boxing Day (December 26), have since been ramped up, with both the local authority and community leaders pushing the property owner to take responsibility for the gutted structure.

Ward 66 councillor Zoë Solomon said the property owner was contacted and instructed as to what was expected from him.

“When a property is either vacant or being renovated, owners are obliged to provide on-site security. The eviction of illegal occupants is the owner’s responsibility, this is considered as a civil matter. We have on several occasions had law enforcement deal with the issues that arise from invaded homes, and it is not sustainable and puts unnecessary strain on the community; we need stronger legislation and enforcement of the law on the owners,” said Solomon.

Norman Gilbert, chairperson of the Bluff Ratepayers and Residents Association (BRRA), said since the fire many of the illegal occupants have moved.

“I have liaised with the property owner through their appointed agent, requesting that they provide an affidavit to the police, confirming that the individuals were occupying the property illegally. Take responsibility for the property’s condition post-fire, which is currently uninhabitable. I have urged the owner to arrange for the demolition and removal of the rubble, as it is negatively impacting the surrounding neighbourhood,” he said.

This incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of property laws and greater accountability from owners.

The BRRA remains determined to address the broader issue of slum properties in The Bluff area to enhance community safety and well-being.
