Merebank singer hits the right notes to win singing sensation title

Fifty-nine-year-old Merebank singer, Shashi Singh, reached new heights after winning the Singing Sensation Brand Ambassador title for Durban.

MEREBANK resident, Shashi Singh (59), was crowned the Singing Sensation Brand Ambassador for Durban after winning an exhilarating singing competition at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Umhlanga on January 13.

Shashi competed in various categories including golden oldies, love songs and classic Indian chutney songs. She was able to win the crowd over with her phenomenal vocals.

Her winning performances included an harmonious rendition of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in the golden oldies category, Sau Saal Pehle for love songs and Chadar Bichao Balama in the classic Indian chutney category.

“I began singing at five years old through encouragement and support from my parents and family. I am self-taught, having learnt through listening to Hindi songs,” revealed Singh.

Shashi credited her late mother, Sitra Singh, and her aunt, Vidyadevi Harrichand, for inspiring her musical journey by constantly singing to her as a child.

She shared that music runs deep in Singh’s family. Her grandfather, Dalip Singh, had led a band in Botha’s Hill back in the 1940s, and that legacy continued to be a source of pride and motivation for her.

She also drew inspiration from iconic Indian playback singers such as Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar, whose timeless melodies influenced her artistry.

Beyond her personal achievements, Singh is passionate about nurturing new talent. “I could not believe at my age I would still be able to do what I love. I would love to encourage up-and-coming singers to reach for the stars. It is a challenging road, and there are sacrifices to make, but I did it and so can you,” she said.

Shashi said her win is not only a win for her but a win for any singers who have dreamed to make a name for themselves.
