Police joint operation yields positive results

One suspect was charged for being in possession of heroin while a learner from a local school was found to be in possession of a knife.

A JOINT operation between Wentworth police and security companies was held in Wentworth, Merebank, Jacobs and surrounding areas on February 7.

The focus was on high visibility, vehicle patrols, foot patrols, stop and searches, and arresting suspects.

A 22-year-old man was arrested for being in possession of copper suspected to be stolen. The suspect was also found in possession of heroin. The suspect is expected to appear in court today (February 10).

Police confiscate a weapon from a learner at school

Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said a search was also conducted at one of the Merebank schools.

Two classes were searched after information was received relating to a learner allegedly brandishing a firearm. However, the police did not recover a firearm.

“One learner was found in possession of a knife. Mzansi security officers were on scene at the school and assisted during the search. Joining the operation were newly appointed members who recently joined the Wentworth Police Station. The new members come from various police training institutions. They have conducted an operation in the greater Wentworth policing area,” said Captain Gumede.

Operational Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Clive Myburg, who led the team said, “The police visibility is of utmost importance in order to deal with crime, and to prevent crime in all hotspot areas.

“Wentworth police is committed in performing crime prevention duties, safeguarding the community in Merewent, Jacobs, and all police precincts,” said Myburg.
