Local anthology book launches at Grosvenor Library

South Africa’s spirit has been embodied in a local anthology book titled South African Verses which was launched at Grosvenor Library.

THE Grosvenor Library was brought to life on February 11, when bookworms packed out the hall to mark the release of South African Verses, an interesting anthology of short stories and poetry from 22 writers from all over the country.

Published by Sakura Book Publishing, the anthology narrates a tapestry of experiences and verse that capture the nation’s kaleidoscope of moments.

Edited by Alta Haffner, co-edited by Ekta Somera, and with a foreword by Charles Haffner, the anthology is a testament to the diverse and rich voices of South African literature.

Ekta Somera and Alta Haffner share their joy over their new book.

“The launch event was a truly unforgettable occasion, bringing together many of the writers featured in the anthology. For some, it was their first experience being published in a book, making the moment even more special. The authors had the chance to sign each other’s books, share their personal stories, and connect over tea and celebratory cake,” said Haffner.

Among the authors is 11-year-old Timia Chetty, a learner at St. Mary’s Primary School. Her short story, The Forgotten Guitar, tells the story of a young boy named Sipho who goes on a journey of discovery after finding an old guitar that was abandoned. Through music, he learns about the past of his late father, a musician during the apartheid era.

Relishing in the moment Timia said, “It is an absolute pleasure to have my short story featured in the South African anthology. It opens doors of possibility and success, beyond possibilities for my future.”

South African Verses can be read by those seeking to immerse themselves in the rich and varied stories that encapsulate the heart of South Africa. Orders can be directed to Alta Haffner on alta@sakurabookpublishing.com.
