Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, said that the accident occurred some time around midnight.

“Initial reports were that there was a minor accident involving two vehicles where first responders were standing off on scene when a vehicle ploughed into the scene, leaving multiple people now injured. Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos as they found the freeway closed with multiple casualties lying on the roadway. Immediately more Ambulances as well as Advanced Life Support Paramedics were dispatched to assist,” he said.

Jamieson said that five people suffered moderate to severe injuries. They were taken to various hospitals in Durban after being stabilised in the field by ALS Paramedics.

The events leading up to the accident are unknown. Jamieson said the SAPS and Metro police were on scene and investigating further.
