The accused are linked to a 2023 business robbery at a tailor shop near South Coast Road in Clairwood.

A MAN was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for business robbery at the Durban Magistrate’s Court recently.

Lyford Muyandu, along with the three other accused, who are still standing trial – Mango Nxumalo, Banele Nxumalo and Dawood Adini – were arrested in connection with a business robbery at a tailor shop in Clairwood in February 2023.

According to the investigating officer, Sergeant Bhekumuzi Dlamini, the suspects entered the shop and held the staff at gunpoint, demanding cash and cellphones. An amount of R4000 cash and cellphones were taken.

Dlamini said although no injuries were reported, the victims were traumatised after the men threatened to shoot them.

“After the robbery, the accused fled the scene and boarded the taxi that was carrying members of the public. A case was reported to the Montclair police station,” said Dlamini.

He said the police worked tirelessly and followed various leads from sources that eventually led to the arrest of the accused later in 2023.

Dlamini said all the accused are foreign nationals who entered South Africa illegally and they do not possess any documentation allowing them to be in the country.

“In addition, they were charged with contravening the Immigration Act,” said Dlamini.
