Residents on The Bluff warned of rise in house break-ins

Smollan said the recent installation of the new Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras on The Bluff has helped to deter crime.

A RECENT increase in night-time house break-ins has been reported in the Bluff area.

Blue Security’s community manager Idan Smollan said criminals are targeting small, easy-to-carry valuables such as cellphones and electronics.

“These thieves are also targeting vehicle keys to steal vehicles and use them to flee the scene with stolen items,” said Smollan.

According to Smollan, the gangs are reportedly dropped off in the area and later escape using stolen vehicles.

He said most of these vehicles have been abandoned, and no arrests have been made yet.

Smollan said the recent installation of the new Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras on The Bluff has helped to deter crime.

The installation of the cameras helped in tracing two cars that had been stolen from a home on The Bluff recently.

“Blue Security’s Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) recovered a silver Jetta, stolen during a recent Brighton Beach house robbery, in Umlazi within an hour, with the keys still in the ignition.

“This trend highlights the value of proactive crime prevention tools in our neighbourhoods. We have increased visibility patrols in the area and remain committed to working closely with neighbourhood watches, the Community Policing Forum, and local residents to combat crime effectively,” said Smollan.

He encouraged residents to consider installing early-warning systems such as outdoor perimeter beams linked to a private security company.

“Alarm systems should be armed at all times. Doors and windows should be securely locked. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to their neighbourhood watch, private security provider, and the police,” he added.
