The South African Weather Service (Saws) issued a warning of heavy rain and potentially hail and localised flooding in some areas, particularly in southern KZN. It stated that rough seas and hazardous navigation is expected, with wave heights reaching up to 6m high in some areas. Inland areas will experience cold to very cold conditions, with snowfall predicted in elevated regions such as the Drakensberg mountains.
Residents or those travelling to the eastern interior of the country are urged to take necessary precautions to prevent wildfires due to the strong surface winds elevating the risk of such runaway fires.
“The cold front will impact many parts of KZN and surrounding regions, making it essential to stay informed and take precautions. Loose objects should be secured to prevent damage, and residents should be cautious when navigating the coastline, especially around ports and harbours. Drivers are advised to exercise caution on the roads, as reduced visibility and slippery surfaces may lead to accidents,” said Saws in the statement.
As for the thousands of runners taking on the Comrades Marathon on June 8, Saws expects predominantly mild to warm and windy conditions, with partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Runners should be aware of a cool change in the weather towards the latter part of the day, when a coastal low and cold front are expected to move northwards up the KZN coast, introducing colder, more moist conditions.
Furthermore, intermediate updates may be followed on X SA Weather Service, Facebook South African Weather Service or other Saws-supported social media platforms.
