Yellowwood Park plugs into e-waste collection drive

The Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit held an e-waste collection drive in Ward 64 to help residents dispose their waste correctly.

IN an attempt to promote environmental sustainability, the eThekwini Municipality’s Cleansing and Solid Waste (CSW) Unit organised an e-waste recycling and sensitisation campaign in Yellowwood Park on October 18.

The campaign aimed at creating awareness on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of electronic waste and encouraging a culture of quality recycling.

Emeldah Mkhulisi, CSW Unit education officer, said that the drive was a major success.

“The Ward 64 community was educated on the importance of e-waste management. Inappropriate disposal leads to health issues in humans and animals. Electronic gadgets contain harmful materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium. If not disposed of properly, these toxins find their way into the soil, water and air, and result in dire health implications,” said Mkhulisi.

She added that such initiatives play a significant role in preventing toxic pollution and providing a cleaner, healthier environment. “We encourage communities to support such campaigns,” said Mkhulisi.

The campaign included collection of an entire truckload of various e-waste items, including obsolete computers, televisions and old electronics that otherwise would have ended up in landfills.
