Police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said the members of the visible policing (Vispol) B Relief team received information about a man in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“The members immediately proceeded to the flat as directed. Upon tactfully entering, they arrested the suspect, who was found with a black Z88 9mm pistol with the serial number erased. A total of 14 live ammunition were also seized. The suspect was transported to Wentworth police station where he was formally charged with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said Gumede.

Gumede said the confiscated firearm will be sent to ballistic testing to determine if it was used in the commission of any other crime.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

The station commander, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, commended the officers who acted swiftly upon receiving the information.

“Well done to our members for their swift action in seizing a firearm and apprehending the suspect. These firearms pose serious threat often being used to commit violent crimes and endanger innocent lives in our communities,” said Mtshali.
