Metro police issue festive season drinking warning

The metro police vow to intensify enforcement of by-laws during the festive season and warn the community not to drink in public.

THE Durban Metro Police will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to drinking in public during this festive season. This is according to metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu.

Zungu said in terms of the Nuisance By-laws, officers will effect a straight arrest for any contravention, no more fines with regards to drinking in public will be issued.

“There are visible signs prohibiting the consumption of alcohol in public along our entire 100km coastline, and it is important to note that drinking in public is strictly prohibited in all public spaces across the eThekwini Municipal District. Anyone found drinking alcohol in public will be arrested and detained at SAPS cells,” said Zungu.

Zungu said the misuse and abuse of alcohol remain one of the biggest crime generators in the community, contributing significantly to:

  • Stabbings
  • Assaults
  • Road accidents, including serious and fatal collisions
  • Many incidents related to Gender-Based Violence.

Metro police vow that the following offences will not be tolerated:

  • Public disturbances,
  • Excessive noise from restaurants, taverns, nightclubs, events, and concerts

“All businesses and individuals are reminded that all by-laws must be adhered to within our City,” he added.
