Men linked to truck jacking case appear in court

Clive Chigwiko and his co-accused, Ngcebo Ngema, were arrested in October 2024 and charged with truck jacking.

TWO accused linked to a truck jacking incident on Lester Road near Mobeni appeared at the Durban Regional Court recently.

Clive Chigwiko and his co-accused, Ngcebo Ngema, were arrested in October 2024 and charged with truck jacking.

Chigwiko applied for bail and his matter was postponed until March 10 while Ngema’s case is still under investigation.

A third accused who is  serving a 20-year jail sentence, Nhlanhla Madzinane, is the main accused in this case. Madzinane appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on August 27 last year for a final judgment.

It emerged in court that Madzinane and his two accomplices planned to hijack a horse and trailer truck travelling on Lester Road near Mobeni in October 2024. The truck was transporting fuel from a petrol depot on Tara Road to Lesotho.

Investigating officer Sergeant Sifiso Shezi of Montclair police station said on the day of the incident, Chigwiko and Ngema allegedly forced a truck driver to pull over on Lester Road.

According to Shezi both accused jumped into the truck. One of them took control of the steering wheel and began driving, while the other held the driver at gunpoint, keeping him hostage as the truck was in motion.

Shezi said the police had received the information about the hijacked truck and moved swiftly. Additional intelligence information revealed the route the accused were using.

The police saw a truck travelling on Lester Road, which fitted the description of the same truck that had been hijacked. The police stopped and searched the truck and found a jamming device, and an unlicensed firearm.

Police arrested two suspects at the scene.

“Further police investigation revealed that on the day of the incident, Madzinane was following a truck in a private vehicle. When he saw the police stopping the truck, he fled. The investigation also uncovered that Madzinane intended to buy the petrol in the truck, valued at R800 000. He pleaded guilty on the charges,” Shezi added.
