The KZN Department of Home Affairs is calling on residents to collect their Smart IDs which are vital for the upcoming elections.
IN KZN, more than 100 000 smart ID cards remain uncollected, prompting the provincial Department of Home Affairs to issue an appeal to residents to collect their documents.

Uncollected smart IDs
Provincial manager Cyril Mncwabe shared these figures during a recent presentation to a parliamentary committee, reporting that as of December 2025, 105 878 smart ID cards were still sitting unclaimed in various offices. This backlog poses challenges to the department and to the individuals who need these IDs to engage in everyday activities.
To address this growing issue, the department has launched several outreach initiatives. These include radio campaigns aimed at spreading awareness and community engagement programmes designed to encourage the public to visit Home Affairs offices to collect their documents.
Youth identified as the main group neglecting collection
Mncwabe specifically highlighted the young population, those aged between 15 and 35, as the group most often neglecting to collect their IDs.
“It is free to apply for a first-time ID. While we no longer issue the old green ID book, some uncollected copies are still at our offices,” he added, noting that around 5 000 green ID books remain uncollected.
Bridging the gap
In an attempt to narrow this gap, the department has collaborated closely with eThekwini Municipality to identify young learners who do not have IDs.
“We work closely with eThekwini Municipality to identify schools where learners need IDs. Community volunteers help identify these learners, who are then assisted at branches such as uMngeni,” Mncwabe said.
Moreover, making the application process more accessible has been a priority. The department recently partnered with several major banks to provide additional points of service.
This intensified effort forms a critical part as the Electoral Commission of South Africa prepares for the first voter registration weekend scheduled for June 20 and 21, in anticipation of the forthcoming local government elections.
Mncwabe is encouraging residents to not postpone collecting their smart IDs, which can assist them in being a part of the democratic process.
