Do not wait, register to vote today

The Independent Electoral Commission has shared that anyone can go online and check if they are registered to vote.

THERE is no longer any need to wait, South Africans can now check their voter roll status. In preparations for the 2026 Local Government Elections, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is encouraging residents to check and update their registration information online, without having to wait for the official voter registration weekend.

The IEC is urging citizens to use its digital platform. This allows them to verify their place on the voters’ roll and make sure their details are current, well in advance of the election day itself. The first voter registration weekend is scheduled for June 20 and 21.

What can you do online?

Using this portal, voters can confirm their registration status, update their home address and check that they were correctly assigned to a particular voting station. This whole process was designed to help prevent any avoidable hold-ups once the polls actually opened.

Beyond that, the platform also offers the ability for users to apply and track for special votes. This was meant to provide a good deal of convenience for anyone who might find themselves unable to cast their vote at their assigned station on the actual election day.

New elections, new look

On April 1, the IEC had also recently presented its new election campaign identity. It came with the slogan, “Get Up. Show Up. Vote.” This campaign, the Commission said, signalled an advanced state of readiness for the upcoming elections.

Mosotho Moepya, chairperson of the IEC, said that the message was designed to connect with citizens in a way that felt both straightforward and impactful. It aimed to encourage them to see voting not merely as a right they possessed but encouraged them to see voting as part of a broader national effort.

“The logo is a symbol of inclusive civic activism and national pride that belongs to all South Africans,” said Moepya.

He also made an appeal to political parties, government institutions and various civil society organisations, urging them to collaborate in order to strengthen the nation’s democracy.

The official date for the 2026 Local Government Elections had not yet been made public.
