Vehicle theft attempt leaves The Bluff baby home with no vehicle
The burglar attempted to steal the vehicle but ended up reversing it into the wall and writing the car off.
IT was a heartbreaking ordeal for the Journey for Hope Baby Home when burglars attempted to steal the home’s vehicle last night (April 27) and in the process reversed into the neighbour’s wall which caused it to collapse. The incident has imposed a significant burden on the facility dedicated to the care of vulnerable infants.

Caileen Hemming, the founder, said she is devastated.
“We were all inside and we heard a crash. We did not even realise it was at our house at first. Someone attempted to steal the home’s van. However, they lost control of the vehicle and forcefully crashed through the property’s wall before coming to an awkward halt, wedged between the driveway and the adjacent yard,” said Hemming.
The situation only worsened as efforts to recover the vehicle began. Given the van’s precarious position, the towing services found themselves unable to access it directly.
“Because of how it landed we could not get a tow truck up our driveway to pull it out. They ended up having to literally drag it out, which caused even more damage. The car had to be written off,” said Hemming.

This loss is a blow to the non-profit organisation. The vehicle was indispensable for various tasks, including transporting the babies.
“It is so sad because the vehicle was paid off. Even if insurance pays, it is so old we will hardly get anything. We used it so much for the home and it was the only car that could fit all of our babies safely in car seats. It’s just devastating,” she shared.
Beyond the immediate financial setback, the emotional toll on the team has been considerable.
“We are honestly at a loss right now. Everything feels overwhelming all at once,” said Hemming.
