Children’s home seeks families to provide love beyond its walls

The St Monica’s Children’s Home is calling on the community to open their hearts so the children can experience a life beyond the home.

ST MONICA’S Children’s Home is reaching out to community members, urging them to consider becoming host families to children in the home. This initiative aims to provide children under its care with the opportunity to experience the solace and affection that a family environment can offer.

Althea Govender, who manages the home, said that many of these children maintain very little, if any, contact with their biological relatives. In certain situations, family members are simply unable to provide a secure and supportive home, which often leaves a profound void in the children’s lives.

Filling the gap

It was to bridge this specific gap that the Host Family Programme had been created, designed to place children with caring families, particularly when school was out for the holidays.

“The programme offers these children the opportunity to experience family life and build meaningful connections that may, in some cases, develop into foster care placements,” said Govender.

She added that while this experience profoundly transforms the children, it proves equally fulfilling for the host families themselves.

“Hosting a child provides an invaluable opportunity for both the family and the child to form a lasting bond, offering the child stability, love, and a sense of belonging beyond the walls of a children’s home,” said Govender.

Required vetting process

Prospective host families will be required to undergo a comprehensive screening procedure. This process is conducted by a registered child protection organisation operating within their local area. Families must demonstrate their capacity to furnish a home environment that is safe, stable and truly nurturing.

With a history stretching back over 130 years, St Monica’s Children’s Home has long been dedicated to the protection and empowerment of vulnerable children. Through the new Host Family Programme, the organisation hopes to open up new possibilities, allowing children to form lasting bonds and finally experience the care and support every child deserved.
