Montclair police warn about remote jamming in Ward 64

The Montclair police station is encouraging Ward 64 residents to express caution after they received reports of remote jamming incidents.

WARD 64 residents are being advised to become more alert, as reports of remote jamming in the community have become more frequent. To combat this the Montclair police station’s social crime prevention unit held an awareness campaign at the Yellowwood Park SPAR.

Colonel Riëtte Kitching, station commander at Montclair police station, said that the unit have taken the necessary steps to address this trend.

The officers were at the SPAR, handing out pamphlets and talking directly to shoppers. They explained that criminals were employing remote jamming devices, which subtly interfered with car locking systems, leaving vehicles vulnerable and making it simple for thieves to access items left inside.

Remember the rules

“Always double-check that your car doors are properly locked before walking away. Hide all valuables like laptops, phones, and wallets in the boot, out of sight and inspect your doors manually, do not rely only on the remote beep,” said Kitching.

She added that they have already seen a notable difference as they have not received new incident reports since the campaign took place.

Kitching continues to urge the community to stay vigilant and to report any suspicious activities observed near parking areas.
