Businessman gunned down in Clairwood

While the victim was chatting with friends outside his business in Clairwood, two men approached and opened fire on him.

A CLAIRWOOD businessman who survived a one-day kidnapping ordeal two weeks ago, was shot outside his business in Clairwood on September 25. The incident happened at around 18:30 on South Coast Road.

The SUN established that Henry Abedzie was standing outside his salon with friends when two unidentified men came and opened fire on him at close range. He was rushed to Clairwood Hospital where he died on arrival.

Police recovered over 16 spent cartridges at the scene. No other individuals were injured during the shooting. The suspects fled the scene shortly after the incident.

Two months ago, Abedzie was abducted from his business in Clairwood and forced to go with the suspects to Ntuzuma township where he was allegedly tortured by them. The suspects demanded a ransom and forced him to give them his account details.

It is also alleged that one of the accused compelled the victim to make electronic transfers from his bank accounts and contact individuals and ask them to deposit into other bank accounts.

An amount of about R18 000 was withdrawn from his account. Two men, Simon Agbedo and Chukwunonso Francis Nweke, were arrested for kidnapping.

Later that day, the police received an anonymous tip-off about a man being held hostage in Ntuzuma.

Officers from Montclair police station, led by Sergeant Malusi Ndlovu, collaborated with detectives from Ntuzuma to set up a trap to arrest the suspects. The two men were arrested and charged with kidnapping.

The accused appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court for a bail application on September 25, and were denied bail.

The Sun also established that the victim was hijacked recently and his cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.

The police have not ruled out the shooting being related to the two incidents.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda was not immediately available for comment.
