“Acting swiftly on this intelligence, Fitama Protection Services Special Operations Unit immediately contacted Homeland Security for assistance in locating and apprehending the suspects,” said Hawksworth.
A co-ordinated search operation was launched across the Umbilo, Glenwood and Berea areas.
“After three hours of continuous searching, the suspects were successfully located in the Berea area by Homeland Security’s Tactical Response Team, working jointly with Fitama Protection Services Special Operations Unit,” he said.
According to Hawksworth, further investigations at the scene revealed that the suspects’ vehicle was fitted with false registration plates.
A remote signal jammer, items suspected to be used to gain unlawful entry into vehicles, and the vehicle’s original registration plates were also discovered inside the vehicle.
He added, “Both suspects were apprehended, and the suspects and their vehicle were transported to Brighton Beach police station for further processing and investigation. This successful operation highlights the importance of intelligence-driven policing, rapid response and effective collaboration between private security partners in combating crime and holding suspected offenders accountable. Fitama Protection Services Special Operations Unit would like to commend Homeland Security TRT for their assistance, dedication and teamwork throughout this operation.”
The suspects are expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
