Man accused of killing Merebank barber to appear in court

A 41-year-old man alleged to have killed well-known Merebank barber Bassat Ali, will make his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, the Wentworth police spokesperson, said members of Wentworth police Vispol unit were alerted about a male victim that had been stabbed on Ajmer Road in Merebank on October 24, at about 19:40.

He said the 22-year-old Pakistani national was allegedly assaulted and sustained stab wounds to the chest and back.

“The officers responded immediately to the scene. On arrival, they were informed that the victim had already been transported to the hospital and had succumbed to his injuries on arrival.

“According to the information received, the suspect had made accusations of theft of a large amount of cash, and he’d implicated the victim as the one who had stolen his money,” he said.

Gumede said Wentworth police detectives arrested the suspect that same evening, and he was detained for murder.

He said a case of murder is being investigated, and police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
