PHOTOS: 75 junior football teams compete for cup at tourney

Young players skillfully dribbled across the field with enthusiasm and determination.

THE junior football 5-a-side tournament kicked off on October 30 at the Yellowwood Park Sports Club with 75 teams competing for the cup.

Chairperson of the Yellowwood Park Football Club (FC), Craig Inggs, said he was proud that teams from surrounding areas joined the tournament, held for the U6 to U13 age groups.

The fun-filled day culminated with a prize-giving ceremony and medals and trophies were awarded to the winners of the different age groups.

Yellowwood Park Sports Club chairman, Clive Smith, said the young players dribbled across the field with enthusiasm and determination and was an indication of what lies ahead in the development of junior football going into the senior ranks.

“The players had fun while simultaneously developing their skills on the field and working as a team. The tournament was a huge success and the club will be hosting more tournaments in the future. We are dedicated to contributing to the development of junior football.

“We thank all the sponsors, the organiser, Beverley van der Westhuizen, and all those who contributed to making the day the success that it was. We are in recess at the moment and will be back next year mid January with more exciting football. We also thank and congratulate all the players who played their hearts out and made their dedicated coaches and referees proud,” said Smith.

The goal of the tournament is to raise money for Yellowwood Park FC’s next season. Funds will be used to buy new kits, balls, cones, water bottles, bibs and another set of junior goalposts.
