WATCH: Here’s how you can help underprivileged learners get to their matric dance

Ward 66 youth, gender and vulnerable groups committee urges community members to get involved in this initiative and donate.

THE Ward 66 youth, gender and vulnerable groups committee has embarked on their matric dance initiative where residents can join to donate their time, skills, or pre-loved clothes and help make sure that every teenager gets to their matric dance.

Heading the initiative, Chantal Bransgrove-Bower from the committee said, “As many of you know, the matric dance is something many teens look forward to and it is an event we never forget. Not everyone gets this opportunity to attend due to affordability and the rising cost of living.

Dresses and suits can cost a fortune. Added to that are the extras that go along with it, therefore, we appeal to residents to join us to assist those who cannot afford the costs of attending their matric dance,” said Bransgrove-Bower. Items that can be donated include evening dresses, ball gowns, suits, blazers or smart clothes which can be worn to a dance.

“We will also be grateful for heels, smart shoes, accessories, make-up, handbags or hair accessories. If you have a skill and can sew or alter some of the dresses that have been donated and just need a bit of a pick-me-up, we would also appreciate the support. Those who are hair stylists or make-up artists can also sponsor their time and skills to make the teenagers look and feel their best,” Bransgrove-Bower added.
